Eurovision 2026 opens in Vienna with a turquoise carpet parade featuring contestants from 35 nations, marking the competition’s 70th anniversary. However, celebrations have been overshadowed by controversy surrounding Israel’s participation, prompting Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Spain to boycott this year’s event.
The dispute stems from Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, launched after a Hamas-led attack in October 2023 that Israeli authorities say killed about 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages. According to the Hamas-led health authority, more than 72,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the start of the conflict. A ceasefire has been in place since 10 October 2025.
Recent contests in Malmö and Basel were marked by large anti-Israel protests and heightened security for Israeli performers. Despite the tensions and repeated demonstrations, many fans continue to support the event as it enters its milestone year.
