Opposition Leader Yair Lapid said he expects additional mergers between political parties ahead of the upcoming fall elections, arguing that rivals can cooperate when united by broader national goals. Speaking in Jerusalem, Lapid said he wanted to set an example by initiating a recent alliance between his party and Naftali Bennett's party under a joint slate led by Bennett.
Lapid said the move was meant to show that leaders who disagree can still work together for the country's benefit. He stressed that while he cannot partner with far right leader Itamar Ben Gvir due to deep ideological differences, he believes cooperation is possible with figures such as Bennett and Gadi Eisenkot based on shared values.
Lapid and Bennett have invited Eisenkot to join their slate in the second position, though Eisenkot has indicated he is unlikely to accept. Speculation continues that Eisenkot may instead pursue a merger with Avigdor Liberman's party as discussions about expanded cooperation continue ahead of the elections.
