Israeli bulldozers raze about 50 Palestinian shops ahead of settlement-linked road project

Israeli bulldozers demolished around 50 Palestinian shops in the town of al-Eizariya, southeast of Jerusalem, clearing land for a planned road project in the occupied West Bank. The structures, which included car washes, scrap yards and produce stands, were removed after authorities said they had been built without permits and obstructed construction. Shop owners had appealed the evacuation orders, but the demolitions proceeded.

Israeli officials say the new road is intended to ease congestion and improve transportation for Palestinian communities. Palestinian officials and rights groups argue the project is tied to a broader plan to separate Palestinian and Israeli traffic and restrict Palestinian access to a major highway serving nearby settlements. Critics say the road forms part of development in the sensitive E1 area, a strategic corridor east of Jerusalem.

The E1 project has long drawn international concern because it could further fragment the West Bank and complicate the creation of a contiguous Palestinian state. Local leaders said more than 200 families would lose their main source of income due to the demolitions, as settlement expansion in the area continues.
