The London School of Economics Students' Union has closed disciplinary proceedings against the university's Israel Society after external legal advice found that the group's actions were protected under freedom of speech laws. The investigation was launched following complaints about the distribution of 'I Support the Israel Defense Forces' wristbands and 'Thank you to the Israel Defense Forces' stickers during a student fair.
An internal report had suggested that the Society's activities may have harmed campus relations and could be perceived as distressing or provocative by some students, recommending sanctions. However, after reviewing legal advice, the Students' Union concluded that the conduct did not meet the threshold for disciplinary action because of statutory protections for lawful political expression.
The Society's president had challenged the investigation, arguing that the Union had a legal duty to safeguard political speech under higher education legislation. A spokesperson for a legal advocacy group supporting the Society said the decision reaffirmed that lawful support for Israel and its armed forces is protected speech and that student groups should not face unequal treatment for expressing political views.
