Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said the country has endured enough 'reckless' wars fought in service of foreign interests, delivering an implicit rebuke to Hezbollah for drawing Lebanon into conflict with Israel. Speaking in Beirut, he called for stronger Arab and international backing as Lebanon continues negotiations with Israel following a 45 day extension of a fragile truce.
Salam criticized what he described as wars Lebanon did not choose, noting that the latest conflict resulted in Israel occupying dozens of towns and villages. He pointed to the heavy toll of the fighting, which has left thousands dead, displaced more than a million people, and caused widespread destruction across the country.
He also stressed that the Lebanese military should be the sole armed force in the country and reaffirmed the government's commitment to disarming Hezbollah. The group has rejected the government's actions and opposes direct negotiations with Israel, deepening internal political tensions as Lebanon seeks stability.
