Johnny Garcia won the Democratic nomination in Texas' 35th Congressional District, defeating Maureen Galindo in a closely watched runoff shaped by controversy over her antisemitic remarks. Galindo had drawn national criticism for statements including her claim that 'Zionist billionaires run the world' and a vow to turn a local immigrant detention center into 'a prison for American Zionists.'
After Galindo finished first in the initial primary, prominent Democratic leaders and Jewish organizations urged voters to reject her candidacy. The race, covering a district between San Antonio and Austin, also drew significant outside spending, including large sums from a group linked to a Republican fundraising platform that promoted Galindo, and advertising from the national Democratic campaign arm opposing her.
Following Garcia’s victory, supporters described the outcome as a rejection of antisemitism within the party. Garcia will face Republican nominee Carlos De La Cruz in the November general election.
