Preliminary results from elections for Fatah's Central Committee indicate that several figures close to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas have secured seats. Among those reportedly elected are his son, Yasser Abbas, and Majed Faraj, head of the Palestinian General Intelligence Service. Ramallah Governor Leila Ghannam was also elected as a new member of the committee.
Senior figures who retained their positions include Hussein al-Sheikh, Abbas's deputy in both the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization, as well as Jibril Rajoub and Mahmoud al-Aloul, who serves as Abbas's deputy in Fatah. The results have not yet been made official.
The elections are part of Fatah's eighth general conference since its founding roughly six decades ago. Reports ahead of the gathering suggested that Abbas convened the conference to strengthen his influence by promoting allies within the movement's top leadership body. Voting for the larger Revolutionary Council is still ongoing.
