Civil Service Commissioner Daniel Hershkowitz has withdrawn his candidacy for state comptroller, according to Hebrew-language media reports. In a statement, he thanked ministers and members of parliament from across the political spectrum for their confidence and support during his campaign.
His withdrawal comes as the opposition party led by Yair Lapid begins collecting signatures to support former High Court Justice Yosef Elron for the role. Elron, who served on the Supreme Court from 2017 until his retirement in 2024, is considered a staunch conservative.
Another prominent candidate is attorney Michael Rabello, who has represented Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in several High Court cases. Netanyahu is reportedly advocating for Rabello and has met with coalition leaders to rally support. The state comptroller is elected by secret ballot in parliament and is responsible for auditing government ministries and ensuring they operate legally and efficiently.
