UK quietly eases Russian oil sanctions as petrol prices climb to highest since 2022 amid Iran conflict

The United Kingdom has delayed a planned crackdown on fuel imports refined from Russian crude, opting to phase in new restrictions rather than impose them immediately. The move comes as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz amid the conflict between the United States and Iran has disrupted global energy supplies, pushing petrol prices to their highest levels since late 2022.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the government was introducing new sanctions gradually in response to market instability, rather than lifting existing measures. Business minister Chris Bryant said the government was increasing pressure on Russia but needed to account for current energy market conditions. A temporary licence has also been issued allowing Russian liquefied natural gas to continue transiting through sanctioned shipping routes until January 1.

The decision has drawn criticism from opposition figures and members of the governing Labour Party, who warned that easing restrictions could undermine support for Ukraine. Data from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air indicates that billions of pounds worth of oil products refined from Russian crude have entered the United Kingdom through countries such as India and Turkey since the initial ban took effect, a route that will now remain open for the time being.
