United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there has been 'some slight progress' in talks aimed at ending the war in Iran, while cautioning against overstating recent developments. Speaking at a gathering of foreign ministers from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Sweden, Rubio noted modest movement in negotiations and described it as a positive step.
Rubio reiterated that the United States insists Iran must never obtain nuclear weapons and must relinquish control of the Strait of Hormuz. He criticized what he described as Iran’s effort to persuade Oman to help establish a system to charge ships passing through the strategic waterway, saying no country should accept such a plan. Rubio also acknowledged President Donald Trump’s disappointment with some allies over their response to the conflict, adding that concerns within the alliance would need to be addressed. He emphasized that recent United States troop adjustments in Europe were part of routine global force reviews and not a punitive measure.
