Ten Indian sailors detained in Iran since July 2025 have been released following sustained diplomatic engagement, according to India’s shipping authorities. The crew members had been held after their vessel, the MV Harbour Phoenix, was intercepted near Jask Port.
India’s Directorate General of Shipping said the sailors were detained, arrested and imprisoned after the interception. They have now been safely reunited, and arrangements are being made for their return to India at the earliest opportunity.
Iran frequently announces the interception of vessels it claims are illegally transporting fuel in Gulf waters. India, which maintains longstanding diplomatic and energy ties with Iran while also balancing relationships with the United States and Israel, pursued a policy of quiet diplomacy during efforts to secure the sailors’ release.
