A vote on whether to boycott Israeli products at the Park Slope Food Coop in Brooklyn will be held virtually due to security concerns and an expected large turnout. The cooperative, which has about 17,000 members, has been embroiled in a yearslong and increasingly heated debate over the proposal.
Coop leadership said the decision to move the meeting online followed safety concerns raised by staff and members, as well as reports of verbal confrontations and some physical altercations tied to the dispute. The organization has also coordinated with the New York Police Department and is introducing additional security measures at its building.
The proposed boycott would bar the sale of certain Israeli products, including specific food brands and produce, and is part of a broader campaign that has drawn attention from local and national political figures, Jewish organizations and anti-Zionist activists. Opponents argue the measure would deepen divisions within the community, while some Jewish members have reported harassment and antisemitism amid the debate.
