New patent images from Russia offer a first look at the next generation of the Lada Niva, a compact and rugged sport utility vehicle that has remained in production for nearly five decades. The upcoming model retains key design cues from the original Niva while incorporating elements reminiscent of the Dacia Duster, reflecting earlier development ties before Western manufacturers withdrew from Russia.
The Niva has long been one of the few Soviet-era vehicles to achieve international recognition, praised for its simple engineering and off-road capability. Previous attempts to modernize it included projects under General Motors and later Renault, but those partnerships ended, most recently after Renault exited Russia in 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine.
Despite sanctions and shifting industry alliances, development of the new Niva appears to be moving forward. Details about its powertrain remain unclear, though it may continue using the long-serving 1.8 liter engine producing 90 horsepower. Production is expected around 2028.
However, the chances of the new model reaching markets such as Israel or Europe are slim. Regulatory challenges related to emissions and safety standards, along with ongoing sanctions, make exports unlikely, even if the vehicle finds buyers in other regions.
