Greece will purchase two Italian-built Bergamini frigates to strengthen its naval capabilities, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced. The decision comes as Athens increases defense spending in response to mounting security concerns across the Mediterranean and the broader Middle East region.
In addition to the new ships, the government has approved upgrades to its existing German-made frigates and improvements to the armed forces' encryption systems. The acquisitions still require parliamentary approval, where the ruling New Democracy party holds an absolute majority.
Greece has traditionally been a major client of both United States and European defense manufacturers and is among four members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization that allocate more than three percent of their gross domestic product to defense spending.
