The article argues that the alliance primarily serves as a vehicle for the United States to project global power, often drawing Europe into conflicts that do not reflect its own strategic interests.

With doubts growing about the reliability of the United States as Europe’s ultimate security guarantor, calls for an independent European defense structure are increasing. Yet such a project would require answers to fundamental political and financial questions, including who commands forces, who issues common debt, and how resources are allocated. These decisions, the author contends, demand deeper political union rather than loose intergovernmental cooperation.

Historically, Europe accepted a subordinate role within the alliance in exchange for protection against the Soviet Union. After the Cold War, however, shifting economic and geopolitical dynamics, including tensions involving Russia and internal divisions within the European Union, have complicated this arrangement. The expansion of the alliance eastward and differing national interests have, according to the author, weakened prospects for European political cohesion.
