The Canadian election is taking place against the backdrop of rising antisemitism and concerns about the safety of the Jewish community. The Liberal Party, projected to win a slim majority, has faced criticism for the increase in anti-Jewish hate during its rule. The party has promised increased funding to protect Jewish sites, criminalization of intimidation of worshippers, and strong diplomatic and security ties with Israel. The Conservative Party has attacked the Liberal Party for the surge in hate crimes and antisemitic crime, promising to fast-track security infrastructure and launch a national task force to stop attacks on the Jewish community. The Bloc Québécois supports the adoption of the IHRA definition of antisemitism but believes that legitimate criticism of Israel should not be restricted. The Green Party pledges to strengthen hate speech laws and increase security funding for houses of worship, but some of its candidates have signed onto the Vote Palestien platform, which calls for an arms embargo against Israel and an end to engagement with Israeli settlements. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has signed onto the same platform and has pressed the Prime Minister on whether he considers Israeli actions in Gaza to be genocide.
