Sefer Bamidbar opens with a count of the numbers of each of the tribes, except for the tribe of Levi, which is counted separately later in our Parasha. The Chatam Sofer and our Sages comment on the significance of the number twenty-two thousand for the tribe of Levi, relating it to the chariot of the Shechina and ministering angels.
