Columbia University has reached a settlement with the United States government, agreeing to pay over $200 million to resolve federal investigations and restore most of its suspended federal funding. The agreement follows months of scrutiny over the university's handling of pro-Palestinian protests and allegations of antisemitism on campus. Acting President Claire Shipman stated that the deal allows Columbia to move forward without admitting to any civil rights violations and preserves the university's autonomy over academic decisions. The settlement also includes measures such as disciplining students for severe disruptions, changes to faculty governance, and increased oversight of Middle Eastern studies programs. Columbia emphasized that the agreement does not grant the government authority over hiring or academic content, and access to over $1.3 billion in federal funding has been restored.
