Albanese's toughest Gaza stance yet - but critics say it's not enough

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has delivered his strongest criticism yet of Israel's actions in Gaza, condemning the denial of aid and the killing of civilians, including children. He called on Israel to comply with international law and allow humanitarian organisations to operate freely, while also urging against the permanent displacement of Palestinians. Despite these statements, Albanese stopped short of recognising Palestinian statehood, instead reaffirming Australia's support for a two-state solution. The opposition criticised Albanese for not holding Hamas responsible for the ongoing crisis, arguing that the militant group is the main obstacle to peace and aid delivery. The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with aid blockades, rising casualties, and failed ceasefire negotiations deepening the crisis.
