Starmer to recall Cabinet amid pressure to back Palestinian state

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will recall his Cabinet from summer recess to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, amid mounting calls for the United Kingdom to recognise a Palestinian state. Over two hundred members of parliament, as well as senior government figures, are urging Starmer to follow the lead of France, but he has so far maintained that recognition should come as part of a broader peace process. Starmer is expected to use his relationship with Donald Trump to encourage renewed United States involvement in ceasefire talks during their meeting in Scotland. The pressure on Starmer is growing, with the Scottish National Party threatening to introduce a bill on Palestinian recognition if the government does not act, potentially leading to a backbench rebellion. Meanwhile, Israel has introduced daily tactical pauses in fighting to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, but aid workers warn that only a full ceasefire will prevent further starvation and suffering.
