Prime Minister Keri Starmer met with United States President Donald Trump at the Turnberry golf resort in Scotland to discuss pressing issues including steel tariffs, the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and the implementation of a recent trade deal. While the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the trade agreement, questions remain over high tariffs on United Kingdom steel exports to the United States.
The meeting took place amid heightened security and growing calls from United Kingdom lawmakers for the government to recognise Palestinian statehood, following France's pledge to do so. Despite pressure from within his own party, Starmer has yet to make a definitive move on the issue, while Trump indicated he would not take a stance on Palestinian statehood himself.
Discussions also touched on the war in Ukraine, with both sides expressing a desire to increase pressure on Russia to end its invasion. No joint round of golf was planned, despite the setting, as the leaders focused on diplomatic and economic matters.
