Hundreds of Druze demonstrators gathered in the southern Syrian city of Sweida, calling for self-determination following deadly clashes with Bedouin Sunni tribes. The violence, which erupted in July, resulted in the deaths of around 1,600 people, many of them Druze civilians. Syrian government forces intervened, but Druze groups have accused Damascus of siding with the Bedouin Sunni and committing atrocities against their community. In response to the unrest, Syria's interim government has set up an investigative committee to examine the sectarian violence and is expected to present its findings in three months. Some protesters waved Israeli flags to thank Israel for its intervention, which included bombing Syrian government forces in July to protect the Druze minority.
