Japan's defence minister Gen Nakatani is visiting Turkey for talks focused on defence industry cooperation, particularly the potential supply of Turkish-made drones. This marks the first official trip of its kind by a Japanese defence minister to Turkey, reflecting Tokyo's growing interest in unmanned systems for its armed forces. Nakatani will meet with his Turkish counterpart Yasar Guler to discuss expanding collaboration on defence equipment and technology, as well as increasing contacts between their respective military units.
During the visit, Nakatani is scheduled to tour Turkish defence companies and facilities, including Turkish Aerospace Industries, navy shipyards, and drone manufacturer Baykar. While inspections and discussions regarding drones are expected, sources indicate that it is too early for any formal agreements. Turkey has supplied drones to several countries, and Japan is considering Turkish drones as part of its efforts to enhance unmanned capabilities across its military branches.
Both countries have condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine, though Turkey has maintained relations with Moscow and refrained from joining Western sanctions. Nakatani's trip to Turkey is part of a broader regional tour that also includes stops in Djibouti and Jordan.
