Egypt unveils 2,000-year old ruins carefully extracted from waters off Alexandria

Egyptian authorities have revealed remarkable ruins from a sunken city off the coast of Alexandria, including ancient buildings, artifacts, and a dock dating back over two thousand years. The underwater site, located in Abu Qir Bay, is believed to be an extension of the historic city of Canopus, which flourished during the rule of the Ptolemaic dynasty and the Roman Empire.

Among the discoveries are limestone structures that may have served religious, residential, and commercial purposes, as well as reservoirs and rock-carved ponds used for water storage and fish cultivation. Notable artifacts include statues of royal figures and sphinxes, such as a partially preserved sphinx bearing the cartouche of Ramses II, and remnants of a merchant ship and harbor crane from ancient times.

The unveiling involved careful extraction of statues and relics by divers, with officials emphasizing that only select items are retrieved, leaving much of the heritage submerged. The find highlights Alexandria's rich archaeological legacy, but also its vulnerability to climate change and rising sea levels, which threaten to submerge much of the city in the coming decades.
