The secret to happy retirement for men might be... not retiring

A new study suggests that men may find greater happiness and satisfaction in their later years by continuing to work past traditional retirement age, rather than retiring. Researchers examined data from over 5,000 older adults and found that men who remained in full-time employment after age 67 reported higher levels of wellbeing, regardless of the type of job. For women, the benefits of working later in life were mainly seen in those with high-status, well-paid positions. The study highlights that work can provide older adults with social engagement, identity, and self-esteem, contributing to healthy ageing.

Experts also suggest rethinking how retirement time is allocated, proposing that people could benefit from taking some retirement earlier in life to balance family and personal interests. This approach could make longer working lives more appealing and help ensure people enjoy their free time while they are still healthy.
