Evin prison: Inside Israel's deadliest strike on Iran

Motahareh Goonei, a political activist, recounts her harrowing experience inside Iran's Evin Prison during a deadly Israeli air strike on 23 June. The attack, which targeted the notorious high-security complex on the edge of Tehran, resulted in the highest civilian death toll from an Israeli strike on Iranian soil, with authorities reporting 80 fatalities including staff, inmates, medical workers, visitors, and local residents.

Satellite images, eyewitness testimonies, and verified footage have shed new light on the events of that day, revealing the scale and impact of the strike in the final hours of the Israel-Iran war. Human Rights Watch has condemned the attack as unlawfully indiscriminate, describing it as an apparent war crime in a report released on 14 August.

Israeli military officials stated that the prison was targeted because it was allegedly being used for intelligence operations against Israel.
