The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition that sought to cancel enlistment orders sent to about 5,500 Haredi yeshiva students. The petitioners argued that the draft notices were issued through an unlawful and discriminatory process, relying on data from the National Insurance Institute. However, the court noted that the military has since changed its policy and no longer uses such data to issue draft orders. As a result, the justices found the petition irrelevant and dismissed it, also canceling a scheduled hearing.
Despite the ruling, the petitioners voiced concern for those who received the original draft notices, warning that many are now classified as draft evaders and may face arrest or penalties. They argued that canceling the orders would have temporarily protected these individuals from such consequences. The organization behind the petition plans to continue its legal efforts, with more petitions expected soon. Each side was ordered to cover its own legal costs.
