At least seventy charities connected to the ongoing conflict in Gaza have been referred to police by a regulatory watchdog over suspected criminal activity. The Charity Commission has opened over three hundred cases in the past eighteen months involving organizations with ties to either Israeli or Hamas interests, with a quarter of these cases now under police investigation for offences such as fraud, theft, inciting religious hatred, or supporting terrorism. While the watchdog declined to name most of the charities, it cited two examples: one had its accounts frozen due to questionable payments, and another received a warning for fundraising for a foreign soldier.
This development comes amid continued violence in Gaza, where Israeli forces recently recovered the bodies of two hostages and intensified military operations, prompting mass displacement of Palestinian residents. Official figures indicate that more than sixty-three thousand Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began nearly two years ago, following a Hamas-led attack that resulted in significant casualties and hostages. The situation remains dire, with ongoing efforts to retrieve hostages and escalating military actions in Gaza City.
