New wave: Sea power turned into energy at Los Angeles port

Floating blue paddles installed at the Port of Los Angeles are quietly harnessing the power of ocean waves to generate electricity, offering a promising alternative to fossil fuels. Developed by Eco Wave Power, these dock-mounted devices use hydraulic pistons and turbines to convert wave motion into electrical current, with the potential to power tens of thousands of homes if expanded along the port's breakwater.

Unlike solar and wind energy, wave power is consistently available, making it an attractive renewable source. However, the sector has struggled with durability and maintenance challenges in harsh ocean environments. Eco Wave Power's design addresses these issues by keeping devices close to shore and retractable during storms, reducing damage and maintenance costs.

The pilot project has sparked interest among engineers and policymakers, with plans to replicate the technology at other suitable sites in the United States and abroad. Supporters emphasize its reliability and minimal environmental impact, highlighting its role in meeting growing energy demands and helping California move toward carbon neutrality.
