The Congress party has strongly criticized Prime Minister Modi and his government's foreign policy after United States President Donald Trump referred to Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir as his 'favorite.' Congress leaders questioned the nature of Modi's relationship with Trump, especially in light of Trump's praise for Munir and the special attention given to Pakistan's leadership at an international summit.
Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh highlighted the contradiction between Modi's efforts to build a close rapport with Trump and the American leader's public gestures towards Pakistan. The party argued that these developments send a negative signal to India and reflect a failure in the current government's diplomatic strategy.
At the summit, Trump also praised India as a great country but did not mention Modi by name, while expressing optimism about peaceful relations between India and Pakistan. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif responded by suggesting Trump be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in recent peace efforts.
