Thousands of Gazans returning home after the ceasefire are confronted with widespread devastation, with the United Nations estimating the damage at seventy billion dollars. Experts describe the task of rebuilding as even more challenging than starting from scratch, as the destruction is so extensive that much of the region is buried under rubble. In some areas, such as Gaza City, up to ninety-two percent of buildings have been damaged or destroyed. Before reconstruction can begin, more than sixty million tonnes of debris must be cleared, making recovery a monumental challenge for the region.
