Once hailed for Oct. 7 heroism, Bedouin bemoan a state they say has since turned its back

Bedouin citizens of Israel, once celebrated for their heroism during the October 7 attacks, now express deep disappointment as they face renewed marginalization and home demolitions. Youssef Ziadna, who risked his life to rescue dozens from Hamas gunfire, describes feeling abandoned by the state that once hailed him as a hero. Despite their sacrifices, many Bedouin communities in the Negev have seen a surge in demolition orders, even targeting families of reservists and those who aided during the crisis.

Community leaders and activists report that enforcement against illegal structures has intensified, leading to the destruction of entire villages and exacerbating long-standing tensions between Bedouins and the government. While officials claim these actions are in accordance with the law, Bedouin residents argue that promises of greater equality and recognition have faded, leaving them without infrastructure, planning rights, or protection.

Amidst the hardship, some Bedouin and Jewish activists are striving to rebuild trust through joint initiatives, hoping to transform the pain of recent years into opportunities for partnership and understanding. Yet, for many like Ziadna, the wounds of October 7 remain fresh, and the struggle for dignity and inclusion continues.
