Women and children are bearing the heaviest burden in modern conflicts, from Ukraine to Gaza and beyond. Recent data reveals that civilian casualties among women and children have quadrupled in the past two years, with sexual violence surging by 87 percent. In Gaza, seven out of ten women killed in conflicts worldwide died, while in Ukraine, millions of women have been displaced and face rising gender-based violence. The Sudan and Yemen civil wars have similarly devastated women and girls, with soaring displacement, food insecurity, and limited access to health and support services. Despite evidence that peace endures longer when women are involved, their participation in negotiations remains minimal, and funding for women's organizations in conflict zones is alarmingly low. The latest United Nations report warns that decades of progress on women's rights and safety are unraveling as wars multiply, urging immediate action to protect and empower women and girls in crisis zones.
