New data from the New York City Police Department shows that Jews were the victims in sixty-two percent of all hate crimes reported last month, with twenty-nine antisemitic incidents out of a total of forty-seven. This marks a sharp increase in the proportion of antisemitic attacks in the city, where Jews have long been the most targeted group. Other reported hate crimes included attacks against Asians, Black individuals, Muslims, other religions, and those motivated by sexual orientation. The police department noted that these figures are preliminary and may change as investigations continue.
The release of these statistics coincides with the city's mayoral election, where anti-Israel activist Zohran Mamdani is expected to win. Mamdani has been outspoken in his criticism of Israel, refusing to use the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of antisemitism and vowing to arrest Israel's prime minister if he visits New York City, citing an international arrest warrant.
