U.S. and Israeli officials have revealed that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps orchestrated a plot to assassinate Israel's ambassador to Mexico, Einat Kranz-Neiger, which was thwarted by Mexican security services last summer. The operation was led by an operative from a secret unit within the Quds Force, which has been recruiting agents across Latin America and operating out of Iran's embassy in Venezuela. Similar plots targeting Israeli officials have been uncovered in Australia and Europe, prompting heightened security measures and diplomatic expulsions. Officials warn that these incidents highlight Iran's extensive overseas network targeting American and Israeli interests, and stress the ongoing global threat posed by Iranian-backed operations.
The attempted assassination is part of a broader pattern of Iranian plots against diplomats, journalists, dissidents, and political figures worldwide. In the lead-up to the 2024 U.S. election, Iranian agents were also reportedly tasked with surveilling and planning to assassinate former President Donald Trump. Israeli officials have pledged continued international cooperation to counter such threats and protect Israeli and Jewish targets around the world.
