Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza, has received the bodies of 15 Palestinians from Israel as part of a ceasefire agreement brokered last month. This exchange follows the return of an Israeli hostage's body and is part of a deal where Israel returns 15 Palestinian hostages for each Israeli hostage released. Since the ceasefire, the remains of 23 hostages held by Hamas have been released, with five still unaccounted for in Gaza. The process of identifying returned Palestinian bodies has been hampered by limited access to DNA kits, with only 89 out of 285 bodies identified so far.
The ceasefire agreement also stipulates increased humanitarian aid to Gaza, but only a fraction of the intended supplies has reached the region. According to the United Nations, just 37,000 tons of aid have entered Gaza, while more than 200,000 metric tons remain undelivered. The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with over 68,800 Palestinians killed in Gaza, about half of whom are women and children. The initial Hamas-led attack in 2023 resulted in 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages taken.
