In wake of October 7, young Israelis embracing Jewish traditions, new survey shows

A new survey by the Jewish People Policy Institute reveals that, two years after the October 7, 2023 attack and amid ongoing conflict, many young Israelis and those who identify as traditional are drawing closer to Jewish traditions and faith. The poll, which included over 1,200 adults, found that a significant portion of younger Jews and Arabs reported increased religious observance, particularly in practices like prayer. However, among secular Jews, there has been a decline in belief in God and religious practice, with only a small percentage reporting increased faith.

The survey also highlights a notable shift in political attitudes, with many respondents moving further to the right since the war began. While the increase in religious engagement is seen more as a turn toward tradition rather than strict religiosity, the political changes are more pronounced, with the right-wing camp growing at the expense of the left. Despite these trends, the survey found minimal changes in how people self-identify religiously, suggesting that the shifts are more about practice and sentiment than formal affiliation.

Analysts caution against interpreting these findings as signs of deepening polarization, noting that the increased interest in tradition is mainly among those who already maintain a mostly secular lifestyle. The results are consistent with earlier studies and reflect broader societal changes in Israel since the onset of the war.
