Federal officials have launched a review into safety protocols at Brown University after a mass shooting on campus earlier this month resulted in two deaths and nine injuries. Investigators from the United States Department of Education will assess the university's emergency notification and surveillance systems, as well as its compliance with federal safety standards. The suspect, identified as Claudio Neves Valente, was also linked to the murder of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor and was later found dead in New Hampshire. University President Christina Paxson stated that emergency alerts were sent to thousands, but the siren system was not used to avoid drawing people toward danger. The Education Department has requested extensive documentation from Brown to determine if the institution met federal requirements for campus safety.
