After Bondi attack, Australian state to crack down on protests, terror symbols, guns

The Australian state of New South Wales is set to enact sweeping new laws in response to the recent deadly attack at Bondi Beach targeting a Jewish event. The proposed legislation will ban the display of terror symbols, restrict protests for up to three months after a terrorist incident, and introduce some of the strictest gun regulations in the country, including limits on firearm ownership and a large-scale gun buyback. These measures follow the attack allegedly carried out by a father and son affiliated with Islamic State, which resulted in the deaths of 15 people and has been described as the deadliest assault on Diaspora Jews in decades. While the government argues the reforms are necessary to ensure public safety and reduce tensions, civil rights groups have pledged legal challenges, claiming the laws undermine the right to protest and unfairly target pro-Palestinian activists. The federal government is also advancing new measures against hate speech and extremism, as the nation grapples with rising antisemitism and calls for greater protection of minority communities.
