Leading Jewish groups say Mamdani reversed antisemitism protections on his first day

Leading Jewish organizations in New York have strongly criticized Mayor Zohran Mamdani for revoking key antisemitism protections on his first day in office. The groups expressed concern over Mamdani's decision to reverse the city's adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism and a measure opposing the boycott movement against Israel, both enacted by his predecessor. While Mamdani has pledged to combat antisemitism, his anti-Zionist stance and policy changes have alarmed many in the Jewish community, who fear increased hostility.

The Jewish groups welcomed Mamdani's decision to maintain the Office to Combat Antisemitism and to have police review protest handling outside houses of worship, but called for clear leadership and sustained commitment to fighting antisemitism. The US Holocaust Memorial Museum also voiced concern over the revocation, warning of the dangers amid rising violence against Jews. Mamdani responded by promising to fight hate and division, emphasizing a universal approach to protecting Jewish New Yorkers.
