Venezuela has released five Spanish citizens, including prominent rights activist Rocio San Miguel, in what Spain called a 'positive step' amid ongoing political upheaval in Caracas. The release comes after the ouster of President Nicolas Maduro and the swearing-in of interim President Delcy Rodriguez, following US actions against Maduro. While Venezuelan authorities promised a broader release of both foreign and local prisoners, local human rights groups report that Venezuelan nationals remain detained and families continue to wait outside detention centers. Rights organizations estimate there are more than 800 political prisoners in Venezuela and have long accused the government of using detentions to suppress dissent, a claim officials deny.
