Islamic State group militants escaped from a prison in eastern Syria during a chaotic transfer of control between Kurdish-led forces and the Syrian government. The incident occurred at Al-Shaddadi prison in Hasakah province, following a ceasefire and integration agreement that saw the Kurdish forces withdraw from key areas and hand over responsibility for detainees. Local residents helped break out roughly 200 prisoners, most of whom were low-level fighters, while the most dangerous detainees had already been relocated to more secure facilities.
