Haredi enlistment on the rise, still falling short of IDF goals - N12

Since July 2025, around 1,100 members of the haredi community have enlisted in the military, reflecting a steady increase in recruitment numbers over recent years. Last year saw 2,800 enlistments, and projections for this year suggest at least 3,300 will join. Military officials note that enlistment numbers typically grow as the recruitment year progresses.

The rise in enlistment is largely attributed to repercussions imposed on those who do not join, which has motivated more young men to avoid being labeled as draft dodgers. However, despite these gains, the numbers still fall short of the military's target, as each annual cohort includes about 14,000 eligible haredi recruits.

There are growing concerns that a new draft law, which would delay the main consequences for not enlisting, could slow or even reverse the positive trend. Finance Ministry representatives stress that making the consequences for draft dodging permanent, rather than temporary, is essential for lasting change. They also note that married individuals, who bear greater financial responsibilities, are more affected by these measures than single individuals, who may delay enlistment.
