Gal Hirsch, who served as Israel's coordinator for hostages and missing persons, has spoken publicly for the first time since the last hostage was returned from Gaza. Appointed the day after the Hamas attacks in October 2023, Hirsch took on the emotionally and politically fraught role of liaising between the government and the families of those abducted, while overseeing negotiation and intelligence efforts. Throughout his tenure, he faced intense criticism and personal harassment, as public anger over the government's handling of the crisis was stoked by protest movements and amplified by media coverage. Despite these challenges, Hirsch maintained that the protests and public pressure inadvertently aided Hamas's psychological warfare, complicating efforts to secure the hostages' release. Now that his mission is complete, the article argues that Hirsch deserves recognition and gratitude for his dedication under extraordinary circumstances.
