Iran is nearing a deal with China to purchase CM-302 anti-ship cruise missiles, according to multiple sources familiar with the negotiations. The supersonic missiles, capable of flying at low altitudes to avoid detection, have a range of about 290 kilometres and would significantly enhance Iran's naval strike capabilities. Talks that began at least two years ago accelerated following a recent 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran.
Iranian officials, including Deputy Defence Minister Massoud Oraei, have reportedly traveled to China to advance the discussions. If finalized, the agreement would represent one of the most significant military sales from China to Iran in recent years, potentially challenging a weapons embargo imposed by the United Nations.
The development comes as the United States increases its naval presence near Iran, deploying major aircraft carriers and strike groups to the region. Analysts warn that the addition of advanced anti-ship missiles could pose a serious threat to American forces, while China, Iran, and Russia continue to strengthen military cooperation through joint exercises and opposition to renewed sanctions.
