United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer traveled to Poland with his wife, Victoria, and their children to trace her family's Jewish roots in the village of Kolo, where her grandparents once lived before fleeing rising antisemitism prior to the First World War. Victoria's father was later born in Britain after his family escaped persecution that drove millions of Jews to emigrate from Poland.
During the visit, the family also went to the Memorial and Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau. Starmer described feeling profound sickness as he confronted what he called the enormity of the planned and industrialized murder of six million Jews. Victoria said returning to the site was just as harrowing as her first visit.
The trip followed Starmer's earlier pledge to strengthen Holocaust remembrance efforts, including plans to build a national Holocaust memorial near Parliament and continued funding for an educational program that brings students to Auschwitz. His leadership comes after his political party faced past findings from the national equality watchdog that it had failed to adequately address antisemitism under previous leadership.
