The United States Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on more than 30 individuals, companies, and vessels accused of supporting Iran’s illicit petroleum trade and weapons production. The measures target what officials describe as a 'shadow fleet' of oil tankers used to transport sanctioned crude and petrochemical products, generating hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.
According to the Treasury Department, the sanctions also focus on networks linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics. These networks are accused of procuring precursor materials and machinery for ballistic missile development and other weapons programs.
The action comes as President Donald Trump intensifies pressure on Iran’s economy and signals the possibility of military action if no agreement is reached over Tehran’s nuclear program. Iran maintains that its nuclear activities are for civilian energy purposes, and officials from both countries remain divided over which sanctions should be lifted and under what conditions.
