Israeli spyware maker sentenced to 8 years in Greece's Predator case

A Greek court has sentenced four people, including two Israelis, to eight years in prison over the illegal use of Predator spyware in a major surveillance scandal that erupted in 2022. Among those convicted is Tal Dilian, founder of the Intellexa consortium, which marketed the spyware in Greece. The defendants were found guilty of breaching the confidentiality of telephone communications, tampering with personal data systems, and illegally accessing information systems. They remain free pending appeal.

The Predator software was used to target more than 90 politicians, journalists, business leaders and senior military officials. The scandal first came to light when investigative journalist Thanassis Koukakis discovered his phone had been wiretapped and infected with spyware. The revelations triggered a political crisis dubbed 'Greek Watergate' by local media and led to the resignation of senior aides to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as well as the head of the national intelligence service.

Although Greece's Supreme Court later cleared intelligence officials and political figures of wrongdoing, the ruling angered victims and media rights advocates. Critics questioned the depth of the investigation, and socialist leader Nikos Androulakis has appealed to the European Court of Human Rights, arguing the case was not thoroughly examined.
