The Republic of Ireland will host Israel in Dublin on October 4 in a Nations League match, the Football Association of Ireland has confirmed. The national police force has stated it is confident it can deliver a safe and secure environment for the fixture.
The association said it had no choice but to fulfil the fixture despite previously voting to seek Israel’s suspension from European competition. Officials warned that failing to play could result in severe sporting, financial and reputational consequences, including points forfeiture, possible relegation, and damage to Ireland’s international ranking.
The association acknowledged concerns about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and said the match would be used to provide tangible support for civilians affected by the conflict. A survey by the players’ union found a majority of domestic professional players opposed playing or hosting Israel, citing moral and safety concerns. Israel has not hosted home matches since October 2023 and has staged fixtures in Hungary due to security issues.
