Aman and Gavin Dhesi, owners of The Scrap Box in York, have become the first non-white winners of the Takeaway of the Year prize at the National Fish and Chip Awards. The brothers, who transformed a former public toilet into their thriving shop a decade ago, described the honour as one every fish and chip shop dreams of achieving.
Aman Dhesi, a British-born Punjabi Sikh, said he is proud to fly the St George's flag, calling fish and chips a symbol of modern Britain’s complexity. He highlighted the dish’s global roots, from European fried potatoes to fish introduced by Jewish refugees, and said it reflects the history of migration, trade and working-class enterprise that has shaped the country.
The brothers followed their father into the trade, with their parents still helping to run the business. They hope their win will inspire others from diverse backgrounds to enter the industry and future competitions, celebrating the evolving story of Britain’s most famous takeaway dish.
